Ernest Henry Cook was born in Soham,(Newmarket Q1-1898 3B:532), son of William and Emma COOK (née WOODBRIDGE).

1901 census...Aged 3, he was at East Fen Common, Soham with hs father William COOK [33] farm labourer, born Wickhambrook; his mother Emma [27]; brothers William [11], John [7] and George [5]; sisters Elizabeth [9] and Ada F [1], and his grandfather Luke WOODBRIDGE [64] farm labourer. All except his father were born in Soham.

1911 census...Aged 13, a farm labourer, he was at East Fen Common, Soham with his parents; brothers Jack (John), George (both farm labourers), Alfred [6] and Charlie [4]; sisters Ada, Mabel [2] and Ivy Maud [6 months]. All the new siblings were born in Soham. 2 of Emma's 12 children had died.

Steven Fuller's excellent website on the Bedfordshire Regiment - www.bedfordregiment.org.uk gives the war diaries:-
On 27th July 1917 the 1st Bedford with the 1st Norfolks took Longueval. They had 64 NCOs and men killed between 27th and 29th. CWGC shows 62 killed on 27th, only 3 having identified graves.
